Margaret Oliphant viewed Jerusalem as the center of Western culture. "The story of Jerusalem is one of the most wonderful in the world, besides being of unparalleled importance to the human race.. In her examination of the city, she focuses on its people and rich history. She recounts the stories of David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Jesus. MARGARET OLIPHANT (1828-1897) was a prolific, versatile Scottish author who supported her family at a time when women rarely made their living through writing. She wrote almost a hundred novels, dozens of works of non-fiction, almost four hundred articles, and numerous short stories.
